DARRYL JENIFER "The Weather Channel" 2026
When the founding bassist of hardcore punk pioneers BAD BRAINS drops a new solo LP, you don’t just hit "play"—you brace yourself for a sonic upheaval. More than four decades after rewriting the rules of aggressive music, Darryl Jenifer returns with "The Weather Channel", his first solo venture since 2010’s acclaimed "In Search of Black Judas". Moving far beyond the constraints of standard punk, Jenifer delivers an adventurous, instrumental masterclass rooted in exploratory jazz, fusion, dub, psychedelia, and funk.
Leading a powerhouse core quartet featuring drummer/percussionist Ben Perowsky, guitarist Karma "Chogyi" Marco, and keyboardist John Medeski, Jenifer crafts an expansive, cinematic world built on fluid improvisation and deep, hypnotic grooves. The album spans eleven tracks, mixing nine fresh originals with brilliant, unexpected reinterpretations of two classic Bad Brains cuts (the sublime reworkings of lead single "Sacred Love II" and "Loves Harmony").
The latter, showcased as a sprawling advance single, perfectly highlights the record's deeply collaborative spirit. Featuring haunting melodica from the late jazz legend Jack DeJohnette alongside lush string arrangements by celebrated composer Karl Berger, the track wraps the listener in emotional warmth without ever losing its edge. Throughout The Weather Channel, echoes of punk urgency and dub-heavy rhythms drift through the ether, but the true driving force is an unyielding, boundary-breaking curiosity. It proves unequivocally that Jenifer’s pioneering PMA (Positive Mental Attitude) and innovative spirit continue to push into thrilling, uncharted territory. Essential, mind-expanding listening.
Born 1969, grew up with the NWOBHM sounds, musically educated with cult french magazines that were ENFER and METAL ATTACK, definitely nailed to the style when "The Number Of The Beast" by IRON MAIDEN was released... From 1982, it was clear life would never be the same ! Young & getting wild to the HEAVY sounds of SAXON, VENOM, BLACK SABBATH, MOTORHEAD, Young Fab also discovered thanks to school mates the NOISE, FILTH & FURY of Hard-Core/Punk bands like G.B.H, DISCHARGE, BROKEN BONES but also CRO-MAGS, BAD BRAINS, FUGAZI, AGNOSTIC FRONT... quickly leading him to explore THRASH METAL and CROSSOVER styles (SLAYER, EXODUS, KREATOR, VOIVOD, ANTHRAX, S.O.D., TESTAMENT...) and later on, through the 90's, everything that was ALTERNATIVE, EXPERIMENTAL, GRUNGE, INDUSTRIAL (SONIC YOUTH, NINE INCH NAILS, SOUDGARDEN, ALICE IN CHAINS)... Not to mention the DEATH-METAL/GRIND-CORE wave (DEATH, MORBID ANGEL, MORGOTH, NAPALM DEATH, BOLT THROWER...)...
Passion & curiosity grew up as years went by ... Fate was SEALED... no turning back !
No Music = No Life !
