MERCYLESS (born Merciless in 1987) is undoubtedly one of the pillars of the French Death-Metal scene - their extensive discography speaks for itself, and their reputation is well established ! MERCYLESS is not one to rest on their laurels and are back in force today with their eighth album “Those Who Reign Below” on OSMOSE Productions, delivering Death-Metal in the purest 90's tradition, when the style was at its apogee - evil, blasphemous, satanic, reminiscent of MORBID ANGEL's “Blessed Are The Sick” in its song structure, alternating heavy and fast passages, technical breaks, tortured solos and otherworldly vocals! MERCYLESS has never denied its thrash origins/influences, especially bands such as 80's Sodom or Kreator, and this can still be heard here and there in the tracks, with a few good old riffs or passages embellishing the band's songs, as well as a definite interest in melody (listen to this solo on “Evil Shall Come... Upon You” - stunning ! or the solo on ‘Thy Respendent Inferno’ ... ) - MERCYLESS know how to vary the pleasures and make their music captivating from start to finish ! There's no trace of modernity - this is old-school death-metal made with guts and heart, and you can feel the band's experience and ability to create dark, ominous atmospheres, The intro to “Extreme Unction” and the outro to “Zecharia 31” are pure marvels, with tracks that crush everything in their path (“I am Hell”/“Prelude To Eternal Darkness”) and others that are heavier in spirit, more disturbing (“Crown of Blasphemy”/“Chaos Requiem”). ... all with memorable riffs, killer leads and a host of rhythmic patterns... MERCYLESS never falters - NEVER have they sounded so strong, so sure of themselves - this “Those Whow Reign Below” is definitely a gem of its kind !
