GRIPPERS "Complicity Is A Weapon" 2024

So the GRIPPERS started out somewhere around 10 years ago... 2 releases in 10 years... "Black Tears" containing 7 tracks, released in 2021... and today this "Complicity Is A Weapon" ... 11 tracks for an approximate duration of 30 minutes... 11 tracks but only the A-side offers new songs, since the B-side consists of the songs from the "Black Tears" EP... That may not sound like much in 10 years, but I love it when bands take their time, refine their songs and ultimately prioritise quality over quantity, and that's exactly what the Grippers do, to our great delight, as "Complicity Is A Weapon", in its whole, is a compendium of the very best in punk rock. It's got the raw energy, the catchy melodies, the easy-to-remember choruses that make you want to sing as loud as you can and, above all, it gives you a real kick - they've got a great vibe going throughout this album, and that's the most important thing about punk rock, in my humble opinion ! This is to be POSITIVE as f**k !
Bands that come to my mind while listening to these songs are - just to give you an idea - Social Distortion, The Ramones (ok, pretty logical - they're the Godfathers in some way), a bit of The Misfits, NOFX and more recent bands like Maid of Ace or Amyl & The Sniffers.. you got it, this is something energetic for sure !! No real downtime, no time to be bored !
However, the band don't confine themselves to punk-rock only when it comes to creation, you can feel more metal or hardcore influences and that enriches their music nicely, very heavy riffs, some others more incisive and instinctive in a more hardcore style, some guitars here and there that are very rock'n'roll, all perfectly mastered for a result that is in the end very coherent !
There's nothing bad to say about this album, it's a very pleasant surprise, refreshing and full of twists and turns. It's a great surprise, refreshing and full of twists and turns, if you like your music authentic, made with guts and passion... you'll love it !
