A short intro ? BIKINI BEACH hail from Konstanz/Germany, and today they're releasing their seventh album, “Cursed”... and yet this is the first I've heard of the band... so what can I expect to discover here ? The artwork is pretty, but doesn't give much indication of the band's style... which makes me even more curious, I must admit!
The record begins... “Birth Of The Curse”, a short intro with warming guitars and other intriguing sounds... which give way to a universe of garage-rock, energy-rock, psychedelic-grunge, punk-rock... We move from tracks like “Cursed”, with its disillusioned feel, fuzzy bass, heavy rhythm and dirty guitars, to others like the much more energetic “Last Words”, which takes us into an intense whirlwind that expresses a certain urgency to expel ideas, fears and frustrations - beautifully executed... Other tracks, such as “Liar Liar” and “I Feel”, are objectively more “surf-infused energy”, bringing variety and a breath of fresh air to the whole album...
“Until You Die” - like ‘Beg For Mercy’ with its very 60's Rock touches - gives way to an unbridled, garage-rock energy, with an unexpected, surprising and completely mad break as a bonus for ‘Until You Die’!
The soaring “Blue” and the more straightforward “Introvert” mix surf-rock/psychedelic grunge influences in style, and there's also the very short “1986”, with its rootsy guitar riff that seems to have escaped from old AC/DC recording sessions, and “Family”, a pure gem of energy-rock, with its big guitar riff with a very Black Sabbath feel....
“Miles Away” - a very garage-rock/punk track - with great energy and a psychedelic break, and ‘Cursed Century’, which ends the album on a high note... A disillusioned ballad on the state of the world, with suave, melancholic melodies and bewitching vocals... which gradually lets the energy produced throughout the album subside...
Raw, enthusiastic and melancholic - that's how I'd describe BIKINI BEACH's “Cursed” album, which manages to channel an insane amount of energy into a short but INTENSE album ! A very very good surprise - go for it !

Born 1969, grew up with the NWOBHM sounds, musically educated with cult french magazines that were ENFER and METAL ATTACK, definitely nailed to the style when "The Number Of The Beast" by IRON MAIDEN was released... From 1982, it was clear life would never be the same ! Young & getting wild to the HEAVY sounds of SAXON, VENOM, BLACK SABBATH, MOTORHEAD, Young Fab also discovered thanks to school mates the NOISE, FILTH & FURY of Hard-Core/Punk bands like G.B.H, DISCHARGE, BROKEN BONES but also CRO-MAGS, BAD BRAINS, FUGAZI... and later on, through the 90's, everything that was ALTERNATIVE, EXPERIMENTAL, GRUNGE, INDUSTRIAL (SONIC YOUTH, NINE INCH NAILS, SOUDGARDEN, ALICE IN CHAINS)... Passion & curiosity grew up as years went by ... Fate was SEALED... no turning back ! No Music = No Life !
