ENTGEIST - Where Shadows Turn Into Sound... (Germany - Post Black Metal - Interview with Tim & Sergej).
Hello! Can you introduce yourself and tell us how it all began for you - your encounter with this musical universe, what appealed to you, what fascinated you and what made you want to get into music?
Tim: Hey, this is Tim. I’m the vocalist of Entgeist. I figure the way I got into music was pretty basic. My father used to listen to punk music, and my older brother started listening to death and thrash metal in his teenage years. Something in this music fascinated me. I guess at first it was just this raw sound, the brutality, and the heroic stories the lyrics used to tell. Later, it became a vent for my own anger. I started diving into DSBM, exploring bands like Shining and the German project Fäulnis.
Around that time, a friend of mine asked me if I wanted to be part of this new band that he had just started. He knew from one of my brothers that I used to scream and shout in my childhood room at my parents’ house. I believe I was 14 or 15 at that time. The band we formed later became Entgeist.
Tell me about the band... How you met - the current line-up - past experiences - and above all - WHY the need to form THIS band?
Tim: Luca, our first rhythm guitarist, asked me if I was interested in being part of the band he just started. That’s where I met Sergej and Michi, both guitarists like Luca. We had a drummer back then whom I barely remember. As he dropped out, Michi became our new drummer. This was the original line-up of Entgeist.
At first, we used to cover songs we all liked, such as Obituary's “Slowly We Rot.” Later, we began to compose our own music. Shitty tracks like “Sterbend frei” but also “Zwischen Trümmern und Nichtmenschen” have arisen.
We all grew up, and things changed a bit. Michi left, and Godvaser took the sticks for Entgeist. We managed to gain Lars as our bassist. Then Luca left, Lars took his place, and Randy became our new bassist.
In my eyes, those guys are all extraordinary musicians and masters of their art. To me, Entgeist is my way of expressing myself. I get grumpy and irritable when I haven’t gotten together with these people in the rehearsal room to make music for too long.
Describe your sound and explain why I should listen to YOUR band at all cost?
Tim: It’s something you can barely describe. It’s black metal, but it’s not black metal at the same time. It’s harmonic and disharmonic. It’s brutal and fast, but slow and groovy as well. It combines a lot of contrasts. And that’s why you should listen to it.
Lyrical and musical inspirations/influences? How important are the lyrics to you? Are there any specific messages or thoughts you try to develop and share through your lyrics?
Tim: As the vocalist, I’m the one writing all the lyrics for Entgeist. They are an expression of the way I look at life. It’s my anger, my fear, my hope, my hate, my despair. In the lyrics, I’m able to process everything that’s in my mind. A lot of the songs are a criticism of society. Others are about failed existences. To me, it’s as important to create images in the head of the listener as to convey a certain feeling through the lyrics.
Sergej: From an instrumental point of view, there are a lot of bands that influenced and inspired me during the last few years. Especially progressive bands like King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Haken, or Job for a Cowboy broadened my musical horizon and gave me some new inspiration on how to approach music.
About the band's discography... Imagine someone who doesn't know your band at all and wants to get interested in.. Which release would you recommend to start with, and why?
Tim: Start with the song “Zwischen Trümmern und Nichtmenschen” and then listen to “Res Gestae” in its entirety to tide yourself over until the upcoming album “Welk”.
Sergej: If you don’t have time to listen to our discography or full albums, I’d recommend the songs “Briefe aus der Isolation”, “Auserzählt”, “Gefangen in der Zeit” or “Verfall” since they capture the essence of what Entgeist is about quite well.
About your latest release?
Sergej: Our second album “Welk” will be released on June 26. It will be available on most streaming platforms, YouTube, or Bandcamp. You can also buy a physical copy of the album in our shop.
The album was written from 2022 to 2024, recorded in 2025, and mixed and mastered at the beginning of 2026.
The album takes the essential ideas that were already crafted on our first album, “Res Gestae,” to another level. The songs are more progressive, include catchier melodies, and are written better (in my opinion 😉).
You can already listen to the first single, “Auserzählt” to get an idea of what I am talking about - (see below - Ed)
Future plans?
Sergej: As a small band, the music industry seems like a game of luck to me. That’s why we will see what the future will bring. Of course, we will write new music and play some more gigs 😉
Your most insane dream with the band would be?
Sergej: To play some of the bigger festivals here in Germany, like Summer Breeze, PartySan or Wacken.
Your BEST & WORST concert - as a band - and why?
Tim: One of the best shows for me was a gig at the Epplehaus in Tübingen in 2019, I think. It was supposed to be our last concert as a band since Michi, our drummer at the time, had just left. We managed to get Godvaser as a replacement for just that one show. We had so much fun that he ended up becoming our new drummer, bringing new energy and even new band members with him.
The worst show so far was in Rothenburg, together with a Thormesis. Not because of the concert itself, but because all of us caught a gastrointestinal infection and felt sick for at least a week afterward. That was literally shit.
Next live-appearance(s)?
Sergej: We will play our release show on June 27, in Heilbronn. Afterwards, we will continue playing some festivals like the “48er Festival Herrenberg” on July 25 or “Helmfest” on August 1. Some more will follow, so check out our social media pages.
Some words on your local scene - bands you're friends with and you'd like to name?
Tim: Check out A Secret Revealed, Halls of Oblivion, Arkuum, Dagdrøm, and Nocturnis.
Last word is yours…
Thanks for the interview, and enjoy listening to our new album!
