- Please, introduce yourself and tell us how it all began?
Hi Fabien, we are SEUM, a bass-only Sludge band from Montreal with Gaspard on Vocals, Fred on Drums and Piotr - myself - on bass. We started playing together back in 2020 after moving to Montreal from France. We all knew each other back in Paris, we even played together with our former bands (Lord Humungus, Uluun and Mlah!) but we only started to hang-out regularly in Montreal.
We are older musicians and were missing playing music, we started SEUM just before the Covid. When the lock-down hit the band became a way for us to cope with the situation, we put a lot of effort into it and here we are 5 years later after 2 albums release (Winterized and DOUBLE DOUBLE) and multiple shows across Canada, US and Europe, about to release our next record, “Conjuring”.
- Describe your sound and explain why I should listen to YOUR band at all costs?
SEUM is drum, bass and vocals only. We play our sludge catchy and tight, during our writing sessions if a track is not a banger we just toss it. If you dig your angry music fun and honest then SEUM is for you.
- Lyrical and musical inspirations/influences ? How important are the lyrics for you ? Are there any specific messages or thoughts you try to develop and share through your lyrics ?
Initially, our main musical influence comes from 90s sludge bands such as EyeHateGod, Iron Monkey, Acid Bath and more. Lyrics have a great deal of importance for us: you can make a decent song with random lyrics but to make a great one you will need your lyrics to fit.As Europeans, moving to North-America at a later age, it gave us a fresh look on our daily environment. The absurdity of modern capitalism, race for technology, urban chaos. We were already surrounded with those back in Paris but they became more tangible after we moved. They inspire us and we aim to treat them in a quirky and tongue-in-cheek tone while always being sincere.
- About your latest release «Conjuring» ? How did you team up with TEMPLE OF THE FUZZ WITCH ? Was it a band you were in touch with before and wanted to work together ?
The split was a proposition of our label Black Throne Productions. We knew about Temple of The Fuzz Witch from before and when the label reached out to us we thought for a while on how we could make it consistent. Temple of The Fuzz Witch are a black/doom band heavily inspired by the occult while we are more urban and gritty. We took it as a challenge and tried to make it work conceptually. For the artwork we came up with the idea of a Ouija board, a cool way to visually represent two different sides. Our friend Charlotte AKA Cloporte, a talented tattoo artist from Lyon, brought this loose concept to life and her cover blew away our expectations. Lyrically we decided to take the project as an opportunity to treat more personal topics and “conjure” present and past issues: aging, addiction, disability - we managed to be darker than usual but still sincere and honest. The record will be out on February 21st on Black Throne and you can already pre-order it here.
- What are your plans for the future?
After the release of “Conjuring” on February 21st we will do a short tour across Eastern Canada to promote the record. We are excited to play again in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal while visiting new cities such as Barrie, Kingston and Trois-Rivieres. We also have a clip ready for one of the tracks and should hit the studio in the next few weeks to record some new songs. We stay busy as usual.
- Your most insane dream with the band would be ?
That might sound like a boring answer but we don’t have dreams as such, projects sure but not dreams. We are older musicians, went through all the usual lows encountered by local bands and we are now enjoying whatever comes next. Dreams are usually unrealistic and it can get frustrating when you are not able to achieve them, we have projects though like touring in a very unlikely location for example, stay tuned!
- Your BEST & WORST concert and why?
We end up having fun in any circumstances. When you ask about the worst show I could tell you about that one in France when only one person showed up but to be honest we still had a great time! As for the best show, I would stay our last show under the Van Horne bridge. It is an outside location under a highway bridge where Montreal bands organize shows during the summer. We organized the last show of the season in October 2024, way more people than we expected showed up and it was just pure insanity: smoke bombs, broken bass, wall of death, we even had the surprise to see a knight in full-armor show up in the middle of the set. And the best thing is that the show was taped, you can have a look here :
- Some words on your local scene - bands you're friends with and you'd like to name ?
Montreal is an incredibly vibrant city in terms of live music. There are countless great bands and the overall scene is very active and supportive. You could dig Doom, Hardcore, Punk, Grind and always find a band to listen to. I won’t name the more obvious ones but check out Ratpiss, Lobotomite, Scorbut, Ghidorah, Destruction Derby, VVomb, Cell Press, Bellwort, Truck Violence, I could go on and on for a long time. All those bands work hard, and it is really stimulating to be surrounded with so much passion.
- Last word is yours..
Thanks for your time and interest Fabien! And to you dear reader, if you’re still thirsty for new music after you finished catching up on SEUM’s great backlog of releases, check out Gourdin, Gaspard and Fred’s new grind side-project. Cheers!

Born 1969, grew up with the NWOBHM sounds, musically educated with cult french magazines that were ENFER and METAL ATTACK, definitely nailed to the style when "The Number Of The Beast" by IRON MAIDEN was released... From 1982, it was clear life would never be the same ! Young & getting wild to the HEAVY sounds of SAXON, VENOM, BLACK SABBATH, MOTORHEAD, Young Fab also discovered thanks to school mates the NOISE, FILTH & FURY of Hard-Core/Punk bands like G.B.H, DISCHARGE, BROKEN BONES but also CRO-MAGS, BAD BRAINS, FUGAZI... and later on, through the 90's, everything that was ALTERNATIVE, EXPERIMENTAL, GRUNGE, INDUSTRIAL (SONIC YOUTH, NINE INCH NAILS, SOUDGARDEN, ALICE IN CHAINS)... Passion & curiosity grew up as years went by ... Fate was SEALED... no turning back ! No Music = No Life !
