MY OWN WILL - Hidden Anger Unleashed ! (Usa - DeathCore/HardCore - Interview with Danny).
Hello ! Can you introduce yourself and tell us how it all began for you - your encounter with this musical universe, what appealed to you, what fascinated you and what made you want to get into music?
I’m Danny Cummings. I play drums in My Own Will. I started playing drums when I was about seven or eight years old. I wanted to play music for as long as I can remember. I never really made a conscious decision to start playing the drums or make music. Before I started playing real drums I was trying to balance pots on sticks to make a drum set. Playing music was almost like a reflex. I just had to do it.
Tell me about the band... How you met - the current line-up - past experiences - and above all - WHY the need to form THIS band?
My Own Will started when a former band I was in broke up. My brother Kyle, who plays guitar in My Own Will and I decided we wanted to keep making music. We asked our friend Dave who had been or singer for a short period of time in our former band to sing for us. We all wanted to do something heavier than before. So before we ever played a show or had a bass player we immediately recorded our first EP. By the time we played our first show we were already playing new material from our second EP and I think that’s where we really started finding our sound. We had fill in bass players for a while until we got Max to play for us. Max moved to Michigan from Houston and was playing in a hardcore band we knew of. We asked if he wanted to play with us too and he never left. I think we all wanted to make music with people that had the same vision for the band.
Describe your sound and explain why I should listen to YOUR band at all cost ?
The sound of My Own Will is best described as aggressive. All of our songs, no matter what emotions are behind the lyrics or feelings the guitars and drums are making you experience. It’s all done with aggression behind it. Everybody experiences anger. Our music is what you listen to when you need to let it out.
Lyrical and musical inspirations/influences ? How important are the lyrics for you ? Are there any specific messages or thoughts you try to develop and share through your lyrics ?
Musically every member is influenced by different music but all share a common ground in hardcore and metal. We all got into heavy music from listening to bands like Hatebreed, Static X, Metallica, The Misfits and Crowbar. We also are influenced a lot by bands from other genres like Coheed and Cambria and the Deftones. These influences really show up when we are discussing things like song structure. All our lyrics are important in some way to me. Most of our songs lyrics are written by Dave and me. I usually listen to what Dave has and then help him expand on what he is writing about or help him come up with patterns he isn’t familiar with. Dave often times has specific thoughts on what his lyrics are about. A lot of times it’s expressing the anger he feels toward something that he can’t express in real life. That’s why when I contribute lyrics. I always expand on Dave’s ideas because he is the one using words to express himself in our music.
About the band's discography... Imagine someone who doesn't know your band at all and wants to get interested in.. Which release would you recommend to start with, and why?
If you want to start listening to My Own Will. You should start with our upcoming release Misery. It is the best representation of the band.
About your latest release ?
Our latest release is Misery. It was recorded last year in Max our bass player’s apartment. He did all the engineering and a large part of the production. It has songs about frustration with the way things are in the world right now and songs about Doom lol. So I think there is something there that everyone can relate to. It will be available on all major streaming services and online stores.
Future plans ?
Our plans are to tour as much as we can and get back in the studio to release more music as soon as we can.
Your most insane dream with the band would be ?
Our dream as a band is to tour with the bands we look up to. Bands like Hatebreed, Unearth and The Acacia Strain. That’s always been the goal for everyone in the band.
Your BEST & WORST concert - as a band - and why ?
Im not sure what our best concert we played was. I think our worst concert and one of the strangest was when we were asked to open for a tour that had some bands we really liked on it. We played our set and it went well but there was kind of a strange feeling the whole night. The concert was kind of flat. The headliner seemed like they were kind of over it. Then the direct support proceeded to insult every band on the tour package. It wasn’t the worst we played or any huge technical difficulties. It was just weird.
Next live-appearance(s) ?
Our next concert is in Clifton New Jersey at Dingbatz June 4th. That will be the first date of The Chaos And Misery Tour with our friends in Nights Of Malice.
Last word is yours..
Thanks for supporting My Own Will and stay on the lookout for the music video for our next single Rorschach.
