MAROMACO - Lifelong Friendship Meets Sonic Intensity ! (Spain - Grind-Core/Hard-Core - Interview with Rapper).

Hello ! Can you introduce yourself and tell us how it all began for you - your encounter with this musical universe, what appealed to you, what fascinated you and what made you want to get into music? 
Hi Fabien! First of all, thank you so much for making time for us in RoughTimes Zine (You're very welcome ! Ed.)
I’m Rapper, guitarist for Maromaco. It all started when I was a teenager, when I got my hands on a Spanish guitar from my uncle and started playing Sepultura songs like a mad nun.
I’d already been listening to hardcore, punk, and metal for a while… I started messing around with the guitar, and after a while I got a bass, which was what I really wanted to play. From there, I got into the local music scene and started playing in bands.

What if I told you that you have to leave for a desert island in 5 minutes—you have no choice… except to take three albums with you… which ones, and why? Would you say that these were game-changers at some point in your life?
Whoa, to a deserted island—in just 5 minutes? Damn!! I’m not ready! Hehehehe. (Case of emergency - no choice ! Ed.)
Off the top of my head, I’d take "Houdini" (Melvins), "Ill Communication" (Beastie Boys) and "The Fat of the Land" (The Prodigy). All three albums marked important periods of change in my life and inspired me when I was writing music at some point. What a trio of albums, man! I’m going to put them on—it’s been a while since I’ve listened to them. (Now that's cool ! Ed.)

Tell me about the band... How you met - the current line-up - past experiences - and above all - WHY the need to form THIS band?
The three of us have been friends for a long time. It all started one day on my way home from work, I called Daviz (Drums) and then Dmi (Vocals). I told them I wanted to put together something intense and raw. They didn’t hesitate, and here we are today. We started rehearsing right away and figuring out our style. After a few months, we were already playing live.
We’ve had our ups and downs like many other bands, but we’ve always managed to bounce back. Around the time of our second album (“El Viaje de Jouli Mouli”), we had a bassist (J.J.). He was also a longtime friend, but it was just a passing phase.

Describe your sound and explain why I should listen to YOUR band at all cost ?
Our sound isn’t sophisticated or convoluted either (hahaha). We go for rawness and sonic intensity. You should listen to us when you feel like blowing up—that’d be a great time to crank up Maromaco full blast.

Lyrical and musical inspirations/influences ? How important are the lyrics for you ? Are there any specific messages or thoughts you try to develop and share through your lyrics ? 
Dmi (Vocals) has a very personal way of approaching lyrics; he shapes and transforms them however he feels like it, which gives the songs a distinct and special touch.  We’re inspired by sounds and bands that are very different from one another. Musically, anything loud unsettles us and inspires us. The lyrics are very important, and we go over them several times before they’re finalized. They deal with social and environmental issues, personal experiences, psychedelic experiences… always with a lot of humor.

About the band's discography... Imagine someone who doesn't know your band at all and wants to get interested in.. Which release would you recommend to start with, and why? 
Well, I'd recommend that you listen to our latest album (“Brutal Digestion”), it captures the essence of the band and is brand new.

About your latest release ? 
We recorded the whole thing in 2024 at our rehearsal space with our regular producer, EvilMan, who also mixed and mastered it. It consists of 12 tracks, and we released it on 12" vinyl thanks to the local label VinilaKo and other labels that collaborated on the release. The artwork was created by Isaac G., who also designed the covers for our demo and “El Viaje de Jouli Mouli.” He’s part of the Maromaco family and is a true artist. Future plans ? 
We’re already busy writing new material, and we think we’ll start recording before the year is out. It’ll be in the same vein as our last album—lots of noise and attitude. And we’ll keep promoting our latest album wherever they’ll let us.

Your most insane dream with the band would be ?
It would be fun to make an album (or a song) with a folk group; it would turn out pretty interesting. But if we’re getting into the realm of the outlandish, it would be cool to play a concert while people throw ice cream in our faces—any flavor would do. (I want photos if this hamppens one day - ok ? Ed.)

Your BEST & WORST concert - as a band - and why ? 
One of the best, if not the best. It was at Brutologos in 2019. It was amazing, and we met so many people who are still like family to us today.
As for the worst… to be honest, I don’t remember any. And if there have been any, it’s always been because of issues unrelated to the show itself—like running out of beer, not getting paid, or people making excuses. We have a very positive attitude. PMA, as Bad Brains would say. (Always & Everyday ! Ed.)

Next live-appearance(s) ?
In September, we have a couple of dates lined up up north, and we’re filling up our schedule little by little.

Some words on your local scene - bands you're friends with and you'd like to name ?
Here in Cáceres, there’s no scene. In Extremadura, there’s a little bit, but not much. If we want to do something along those lines, we have to go elsewhere—especially up north, where there’s a very active underground scene. We have several bands we’re friends with. 
River Hakes, Fuck The Leader, Kimen, PиeurA, Machv Lanv, Rato Raro, Wan Tung Frito, Death at Dawn, Nashgul, La Hija del Carroñero, Pacydermo Scato, Herrumbre, Urgent Dissection, Oxicorte, Farrokh Bulsara... I’m sure I’m leaving some out. The scene here, in Spain, is really strong.

What’s the question you’ve always dreamed of answering but have never been asked? Just a heads-up: I’m also waiting for the answer that goes with it...
To be honest, I can’t think of any question we’ve ever dreamed of being asked.
